<itunes:summary>Jeremy Caris serves as the Media Director and as an Associate Pastor on the Senior Leadership Team for Abiding Glory Church & International Ministry Base, overseeing the discipleship, training, and equipping facet of the ministry. Jeremy longs to see the body of Christ demonstrating both the character and power of Jesus which flows from the surrendered life. His passion is to train and equip the Church to function as the warrior bride of Jesus, fulfilling the original mandate that God gave mankind to extend the rule and reign of His Kingdom throughout all of creation. He typically operates in a revelatory teaching anointing with bold demonstrations of healing, miracles, and prophetic ministry. Jeremy has been married for more than ten years to Mandy Caris, who serves as the Creative Arts Director for Abiding Glory Church. They live in Knoxville, TN along with their two sons.

When God called Jeremy and Mandy Caris into ministry, He gave them a very clear mandate to carry a key message to the body of Christ about living and walking by the Spirit. As God began orchestrating their lives to model that message, they found themselves primarily focused on living in deep spiritual intimacy with God and then releasing the power and authority of that relationship through their everyday lives. As a result, Jeremy teaches the foundational truth of the Word with simple clarity and reveals deep things of the Spirit in such a practical way that it empowers believers to shift into a lifestyle of revealing “on Earth as it is in Heaven” through their own lives. Following the model of Jesus both “to do and teach” (Acts 1:1), he demonstrates the Kingdom through the power of the Spirit and equips others to do the same.</itunes:summary>

While you rejoice in your heart, normal life feels dull for a time after you experience God so near. There are, in fact, four levels of the presence of God which we see in Scripture and which we can experience.

The four levels of the presence of God are the:

Omni-presence

Indwelling presence

Manifest presence

Evidential presence

Omni-presence

The omni-presence of God simply means that God is everywhere whether we perceive Him or not. The prefix, “omni,” is a Latin term meaning, all or universal. So you could call this the universal presence of God, or say that God is all-present. God is everywhere always because “… all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Col. 1:16-17 ESV). King David summarized it well when He wrote, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?” (Psa. 139:7 ESV).

“Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.” Jer. 23:23-24 ESV

It is interesting that the Prophet Jeremiah wrote, “declares the LORD,” three times within just two scriptures, reaffirming this truth. The Apostle Paul refers to the existence of God as something that every human knows because it is evident to us all. He states that since God’s invisible attributes are clearly perceived through His creation, all of mankind is guilty of judgement if they do not surrender control of their lives to Him.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” Rom. 1:19-20

Indwelling Presence

The indwelling presence is “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Col. 1:27). As Jesus told Nicodemus, we must be born again to enter into the Kingdom of God (Joh. 3:3). We were born sinful because we were born of Adam (Rom. 5:12, 17), but by grace through faith God raises us to new life in Christ (Eph. 2:8; Rom. 8:11). He makes us a new creation in Christ, transforming our lives through the seed of life He plants within us: His own Spirit.

“By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.” 1Jo. 4:13

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? …” 1Co. 6:19 ESV

It is because of the indwelling presence of the Spirit of God that we know that God abides in us (1Jo. 3:24). It is God’s Spirit that gives us eternal life and seals us for the day of our final redemption. He is the guarantee of the fullness of all that Jesus purchased for us with His life.

“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” Eph. 1:13-14 ESV (2Co. 1:22, 5:5)

Manifest Presence

The manifest presence differs from the indwelling presence in that it falls upon (Eze. 11:5), rushes upon (Jud. 14:6, 15:14; 1Sa. 10:10, 11:6), or is smeared upon you instead of dwelling within you. This is what the Bible refers to as the anointing. The word, “anoint,” is a Hebrew word which means, “to smear on, to rub with oil”.

In the Old Testament, men were anointed with oil to designate, authorize, and commission them for a special purpose. God anoints us with His Spirit for the same reasons, by which He also empowers us to fulfill His purpose. Therefore, the anointing is the presence of God’s power for a purpose. The presence is manifest in the sense that it is tangible, or made known, to you. It is not a feeling, but feeling accompanies it. It is perceivable grace to perform God’s will.

Jesus began His public ministry by reading out of Isaiah 61, declaring that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him because He was anointed, and revealing that God’s anointing is for a purpose.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luk. 4:18 ESV

The manifest presence of God is for a purpose: to empower us to touch the world around us with the power of God. In short, you receive power to do God’s will when the Holy Spirit falls upon you (Act. 1:8).

“… God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” Act. 10:38 ESV

Evidential Presence

The evidential presence is a term that I coined to describe what the Bible refers to as the glory of the Lord. The glory is when the presence of God is not only evident to you, but perceivable to those around you as well. It is the presence of God on display. It is for that reason that I describe it as the evidential presence. The ultimate example of the glory of the Lord is the incarnation of Jesus. His name is Emmanuel, meaning, “God is with us.” He is the radiant and glorious presence of God. In Him, all the fullness of God was made evident to us all (Col. 1:19; Heb. 1:1-3).

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” Joh. 1:14 ESV

Adam and Eve “heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden,” and because they sinned they “hid themselves from the presence of the Lord” (Gen. 3:8). Since they tried to hide themselves physically, this indicates that they experienced the presence of God physically as well (Gen. 3:7). Even after this, God continued to make His presence evident to mankind in various ways. The Bible says that He had shown His glory to all of Israel through His voice, booming out of the midst of fire.

“And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live.” Deu. 5:24 ESV

In Hebrew the word referring to the glory of God is, “kabod,” which figuratively means, “weighty”. It’s the weighty splendor of God, the substance or evidence of His presence. When you are in the glory presence of God, you may not physically see or hear anything, but you will often feel the tangible, heavy, weighty substance of God all over you. In the Old Testament, we find that when the glory of the Lord filled the house of God with a cloud, the priests could not stand to minister (Exo. 40:34; 2Ch. 5:13-14).

The glory of God is the atmosphere of Heaven, the very substance of the Kingdom — the evidential presence of God Himself. God is still revealing Himself to mankind just as He always has (Mal. 3:6). After all, why would God not reveal Himself to His own creation? The moments that I’ve experienced the glory of God have ruined me and reshaped me at the same time. There is nothing like His presence.

My prayer is that God will cause you to hunger for your own experience in His presence — to know the nearness of God Himself. I pray that you would desire to know Him for who He is.

The Bible says that we “grow up into salvation” in the same way we should grow to be responsible adults (1 Pet 2:2). Therefore our experience of the fullness of all that is available in Christ should be growing as well. There are reasons why some grow into “all things” more quickly than others. First, they know that they have nothing without God (1 Chr 29:14). Second, they are assured in their hearts that “all things” have already been granted to them by God because He wants them to “become partakers of the divine nature” through Christ. And lastly, they have learned how to receive of His increase.

“… What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?” 1 Cor 4:7 ESV

As an English speaking American reading an English translation of the Bible, it is very easy to assume a mentality that whatever God gives us we will automatically and unintentionally receive, based on this scripture. However, we must understand what it really means to receive, Biblically. There are two Greek words used in the New Testament which are translated, “receive”, and yet, they have very different implications. The first word is dechomai (dekh’-om-ahee) and the second is lambano (lam-bah-no).

Passive vs. Active Aggressive Receiving

With a little research, you will find that dechomai speaks of receiving in a passive way. It is a passive verb which indicates receiving in the sense of welcoming and accepting. Lambano is a completely different way of receiving and understanding. Lambano is an active aggressive verb which indicates receiving into action or taking possession through action.

Let me illustrate the difference. If someone threw a glass of cold water on you on a hot day, you would dechomai the water, welcoming and accepting it without having to do anything. However, if someone handed you a glass of cold water, making it available, and you then intentionally interacted with them to take it into your possession, you would lambano the water. Either way, you received it. Through this illustration, you can see why lambano is translated, “take”, as often as it is translated, “receive”. Let’s look at some examples in the Bible. [I will add comments to these scriptures inside brackets.]

“And Simon answered, “ Master, we toiled all night [trying to catch fish] and took [lambano] nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” Luke 5:5 ESV

“When he [Jesus] was at table with them, he took [lambano] the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them.” Luke 24:30 ESV

There is no fisherman that I know of who expects fish to jump out of the water and directly in into their boat. They know they must lambano the fish, taking them into possession through some kind of action. In the same way, Jesus reached out to lambano the bread, receiving it unto Himself through action.

Do You Lambano?

“For everyone who asks receives [lambano], and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Luke 11:10 ESV

Perhaps you were led to believe that you should ask of God and then wait for the answer to fall on you at the right time, as if you were expecting Him to throw a glass of water at you, if He felt like it. However, this scripture says that everyone who asks must take action to receive it. Everyone who asks must lambano the answer from God, who is not only willing now, but also waiting for us to do so.

God holds out provision, making it available to all who are in Christ. Then He tells us to pray for it, asking in agreement with what He’s already demonstrated is His will through Christ. Then we must reach out and take what He is offering in order to receive it. God assures us in His Word of His unchanging desire to answer our prayers, and yet He wants us to come asking earnestly, persistently, boldly, and expectantly. Our receiving from God is not meant to be a passive act. God wants to interact with us. There must be action in both His giving and our receiving.

If you received Christ as your Savior and the sacrifice for your sins, then you do understand how to lambano. Everything you receive from God comes exactly the same way: by grace through faith — reaching out to take hold of what He is freely offering. Not a single person has ever received Christ any other way. God acts and we respond. God initiates and we cooperate.

Intentionally Receiving

Now, let’s look again at the first verse I quoted:

“… What do you have that you did not lambano? If then you lambano it, why do you boast as if you did not lambano it?” 1 Cor 4:7 ESV

In other words, nothing that you’ve received from God was automatically and unintentionally received into your experience, so why boast as if you don’t know why God apparently gave you more favor than anyone else who is in Christ? Instead of boasting, you should teach others how to lambano!

“As each has received [lambano] a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:” 1 Pet 4:10

This verse gives us permission, and responsibility as good stewards, to use what we lambano from God to serve one another. In doing so, it also illustrates a key on how to lambano. When it says “as”, it means “in the same way”. In the same way you take a glass of water to receive it, you intentionally take God’s gifts and use them to serve each other, as good stewards would. So, in the same way, we take all things pertaining to life and godliness through intentional and cooperating action, putting them to use. In other words, do something in expectation that you have taken hold of what you reached out for. Receive it into action!

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received [lambano] it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24 ESV

This literally means, “Whatever you ask in prayer, lambano it by faith, and it will be yours.” Receive it by taking it! The Biblical act of receiving looks like the intentional action of taking. No one takes hold of something, all the while wondering if they really have a hold on it. They take hold of it and know that they have it as they are receiving it to themselves. They reach out, grab it, and pull it in. That’s how you receive from God.

Good Stewards of Grace

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.” 1 Cor 15:10 ESV

It is only by the grace of God that we have anything, and yet it is by the action of faith that we make it ours in experience. The grace of God requires our cooperation in order for it to have it’s full effect in our lives. The Apostle Paul spoke of this very clearly, even implying that God’s grace could have been released and available for him in vain if he had not cooperated with it.

Now, let’s take it a step further. In the same way you receive a gift, use it. 1 Peter 4:10 gives you permission to lambano a gift from God with the intention of serving others. In fact, doing so makes you a good steward of His fully available and varied grace. When someone needs something, you have access to a warehouse full of “all things pertaining to life and godliness” — all available for the taking. A good steward uses what God has entrusted to their care and produces increase from it (Mat 25:14-30). This is part of the work that God gives us to do, and by doing it, God is glorified (Joh 17:4).

At first glance, it may seem as if there is little to expound on, but I feel today the Church needs to remind itself what godly wisdom is.

“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.” Pro 4:7 ESV

You might say that the very first sign of wisdom is knowing that you need it, and posturing your heart to get it. Wisdom can be gained in two ways: it can be imparted spiritually (1 Kin. 4:29-30; 2 Chr. 1:11-12), and it can be learned (Psa. 51:6, 90:12; Pro. 4:5, 7). Our goal, either way, should be to get wisdom from above — wisdom from God. There are, in fact, two kinds of wisdom: wisdom from above, or godly wisdom, and earthly, unspiritual, demonic wisdom (Jam. 3:13-18).

A Revelation of Christ

Wisdom from above always starts with knowing God Himself — with a revelation of Jesus Christ. Paul unlocked revelation that turned the world upside down, which he received through a revelation of Christ Himself.

”For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel. For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.“ Gal. 1:11-12 ESV

Receiving wisdom from above is parallel with receiving a revelation of Christ — you can’t have one without the other. We all desperately need a revelation of Christ Himself. May we never stop pressing into Him until we receive it and He causes us to lay down every other thing for an ever-increasing measure of God Himself. Godly wisdom has the character of Christ, so if we want godly wisdom we must begin by seeking the Wise.

“Who is there among you who is wise and intelligent? Then let him by his noble living show forth his [good] works with the [unobtrusive] humility [which is the proper attribute] of true wisdom.

But if you have bitter jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry, selfish ambition) in your hearts, do not pride yourselves on it and thus be in defiance of and false to the Truth.

This [superficial] wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual (animal), even devilish (demoniacal).

For wherever there is jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry and selfish ambition), there will also be confusion (unrest, disharmony, rebellion) and all sorts of evil and vile practices.

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure (undefiled); then it is peace-loving, courteous (considerate, gentle). [It is willing to] yield to reason, full of compassion and good fruits; it is wholehearted and straightforward, impartial and unfeigned (free from doubts, wavering, and insincerity).

And the harvest of righteousness (of conformity to God’s will in thought and deed) is [the fruit of the seed] sown in peace by those who work for and make peace [in themselves and in others, that peace which means concord, agreement, and harmony between individuals, with undisturbedness, in a peaceful mind free from fears and agitating passions and moral conflicts].” James 3:13-18 AMP

Get Understanding

One with wisdom lives by showing good works though humility, which is the proper attribute of true wisdom. Jesus, of course, fully exemplified and embodied wisdom. James immediately contrasts godly wisdom with another kind of wisdom with profound attributes of it’s own. These two kinds of wisdom couldn’t be more opposite. Instead of showing good works through humility, earthly wisdom will display jealousy and contention through pride. James boldly clarifies that this earthly wisdom is not only unspiritual and animalistic, but even demonic.

This immediately causes me to revisit the proverb, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.” It is now adequately clear that we should interpret this to mean, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom from above — godly wisdom!” This may seem incredibly simplistic, but if you continue along this line of thought you will see that it is invaluable to our lives. The wisdom of God would become more clear to us in the midst of many controversies if we would learn to look for the opposing fruit of these two kinds of wisdom.

Two Kinds of Fruit

In the same way that Jesus said that we would know people by their fruit (Mat. 11:15-19, 12:33), we can know earthly wisdom by it’s fruit as well. Using fruit as a metaphor to explain the true reality beyond what may be immediately apparent is a brilliant concept. Not only does this tell how to evaluate a person or situation, but it also promises to reveal truth over time. You see, sometimes people can very effectively hide what is true, whether it concerns their lives or the reality beyond what they say or believe. However, this one test never fails: the test of time.

Fruit takes time to grow, and the promise is that in due time you will know the truth because the fruit will become increasingly apparent. You can’t fake fruit; earthly wisdom can’t produce godly fruit. Sometimes fruit can be polished up to appear better than it really is, and this is probably why God likes to put fruit under pressure! Good fruit under pressure releases the blessings of God and the grace of Jesus to the world around us. Bad fruit under pressure produces a stench that cannot be doctored up.

Check-Check, One-Two, One-Two

Here’s were the rubber meets the road; or were the fruit meets the juicer, if you prefer. People can be very convincing, even hard to oppose, because their words and thoughts are well studied, organized, and sharply presented. But, if you want to evaluate what they say, you can first put their ideas under a little pressure and see what comes out when the fruit is squeezed. You’ve got to play the role of fruit inspector, checking apparent wisdom against the Biblical standard and then seeing it for what it is.

Earthly Wisdom

So let’s be extremely clear about this. Earthly wisdom produces bitter jealousy, envy, contention, rivalry, selfish ambition, and pride. Therefore it is in stark defiance to the Truth. This will seem impossible to one who exhibits earthly wisdom, because they think they are promoting truth with their wisdom. But the fruit proves it for what it actually is, and the Bible clearly says that this sort of fruit is in absolute defiance to the truth. Whatever truths they may have, whatever facts they do know correctly, are made completely irrelevant and ineffectual by their earthly wisdom.

The scripture in James goes on to reveal that there are other fruits produced by earthly wisdom. Based on the passage in James and from my experience, I would say that there are three levels of fruit produced by earthly wisdom. The first layer is bitterness, jealousy, envy, contention, rivals, selfish ambition, and pride. The second layer is confusion, unrest, disharmony, and rebellion. And the full result is the plummet into all sorts of other evil.

It’s worth noting that these fruits are produced from within the person promoting this superficial, earthly wisdom. The messenger is intimately integrated with their message. As they release their earthly wisdom, they also release these fruits into the atmosphere around them, carrying it with them where ever they go.

Godly Wisdom

Godly wisdom flows from the heart of a person with a revelation of Christ, producing a harvest of righteousness. Godly wisdom is pure and undefiled. In part, this means “it really is what it is“ — it’s pure and undefiled, undiluted and unpolluted. Godly wisdom loves peace, and is therefore courteous, compassionate, considerate, gentle, and willing to yield to reason. It is whole-hearted, straightforward, impartial, free from doubts, free from wavering, and free from insincerity. It results in good works produced through humility. Those who walk in godly wisdom work for peace in themselves and others by seeking common ground and focusing on harmony between people. They work to dispel fears, agitations, and conflicts in themselves first and in others second.

Truth in the hands of a person with godly wisdom is a powerful thing. It is also in exuberant support of Truth. This means that whatever revelation they have, whatever truths they wield, will be made relevant and effectual by their godly wisdom.

Therefore, get wisdom from above; get godly understanding. Do not forget what godly wisdom really is, and do not turn away from it (Pro. 4:5).

My eyes still fill with tears when I see the footage, or think about the costly price that has been paid in blood and tears on that day, and every day since then until now. My wife and I had been at the twin towers not long before they fell, and we were at ground zero soon after they were gone. Yet, as we stood in a desolate field in Shanksville, PA where the heroes of Flight 93 were laid to rest in the wreckage, the blistering quiet ripped through our souls. These are moments that change you. These are moments that shape and define you.

Both leaders and critics were forged that day. I wish to share a few of the leadership lessons that resonate with me as I remember this day. It’s my goal to attain a life that exhibits such leadership.

1. A leader must be resolved to do whatever it takes to confront whatever the day may require, regardless of the cost.
2. Strong leaders embody a sense of determination to overcome all obstacles and odds.
3. True leaders inspire others with a resolve to move forward from where we are today.
4. Under pressure, a good leader remains loyal to purpose, principles, and people.
5. Secure leaders only make promises that they intend to keep.
6. True leaders do not waiver in their commitment to live up to their word.
7. Leaders must be willing to submit their own lives to severe criticism in fulfilling their purpose.

“But Jesus answered them, My Father has worked [even] until now, [He has never ceased working; He is still working] and I, too, must be at [divine] work.” John 5:17 AMP

We are made in God’s image. Therefore, we operate effectively when we do what we see the Father doing as Jesus demonstrated. We are designed to operate exactly the way He does.

We create as God creates. God creates by a process of: (1) thought, (2) intention, (3) decree, and (4) expectation. This is the same process that we must follow. To explain it in a little more depth as it applies to us, we create by: (1) asking and seeking in your heart, (2) believing with intention, (3) decreeing with thanksgiving, (4) and then expecting to receive.

First, you ask, seek, dig, and search the written word in the power of the Spirit until you are fully convinced in your heart of God’s will and of what’s available to you personally right here and now. Then, you believe that you have already received it even though you haven’t seen the manifestation of it yet. You can do this because once you’ve seen it in spirit, it has already been given to you (Heb. 11:1). The thought of your heart is the initial substance of creation.

Faith does not activate what you hope for or what you know you should believe. It will not activate what you want others to think you believe or even what you want to believe. It will only work with what you honestly hold in your heart with expectation. It has already begun the process of transition from the spiritual realm to the physical realm. If you see it in spirit, it is already real and you know that you have what you asked for because Jesus hears you.

“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” 1 John 5:14-15 ESV

Once you ask and believe, once you “see” it, you decree it! You don’t ask any more. You decree, expecting to see it manifested. This is where most of us sabotage the process. Without an understanding of God’s ways, most simply wait and continue asking and hoping instead of believing and decreeing. This often develops into doubt, which obstructs faith. Each of us already has enough faith if we have become a new creation in Christ (Rom. 12:3).

“You shall also decide and decree a thing, and it shall be established for you; and the light [of God's favor] shall shine upon your ways.” Job 22:28 AMP

You have the faith! You just need to remove anything that is obstructing your faith from flowing freely. Eliminate all doubt. Remove everything that hinders. Replace every ungodly belief and false doctrine until your thoughts and beliefs are aligned with the perfect and eternally relevant example of Jesus Christ. Then decree it and expect it to be fulfilled. Let your faith flow freely!

There may be some truth in various individual conspiracy theories. However, super-conspiracies are an entirely different story. Super-conspiracies view many of the smaller event and systematic conspiracy theories as though they are masterfully woven together by secret elite organizations, forming an extensive hierarchy of control and manipulation in order to fulfill some mass insidious plot, such as world domination. It unfolds in the form of many people intricately working together in perplexing ways, maintaining unity and secrecy over many generations and cultures. This is the ideology of conspiracism, which takes a dangerous curve towards pulling the Body of Christ off of their God-given mandate in several ways, which I will explain. This happens when conspiracism is mingled with the Gospel and preached as though it aligns with the sound words of Jesus. I believe that Paul’s first letter to Timothy speaks very strongly toward that issue.

“… charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. 5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.” 1 Timothy 1:3-7 ESV

Further in the same letter, Paul returns his attention back to this standard, saying, “Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness;” (1Tim. 4:7). He then concludes his letter by expounding on the nature of “any different doctrine,” along with what it produces.

“If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth …” 1 Timothy 6:3-5 ESV

Conspiracism is nothing more than speculation and myth, and it does not promote stewardship from God that is by faith. Christians who preach conspiracism as though it is part of God’s message to the Church are promoting speculation, vain discussion with vain and confident assertions about things they have no way of actually knowing, stirring up unnecessary and irrelevant controversy and dissension, slandering leaders and those in authority, inspiring evil suspicion, and questioning the intent of every move that leaders make. In short, it causes pointless constant friction within the Church, but it produces nothing good. We need to maintain God’s worldview, which He gives us in His Word. Therefore, Paul says to deal with those who teach myths and promote speculation within the Church by charging them to stop teaching it and stop devoting themselves to it.

Respect For Authority

Conspiracism influences people to mistrust and slander those in positions of governing authority, but the Word of God teaches us to act differently. In his letter to the Church in Rome, Paul is very clear about how Christians should regard authority. Rome and it’s rulers were nowhere near perfect. Yet, Paul makes strong statements about submitting to authority knowing that many of the authorities of whom he spoke were absolutely ungodly and immoral. His position aligns with and reinforces the standard that he saw throughout the Tanakh; such as, the stories of David and King Saul (1Sam. 16-31, 2Sam. 1), and Daniel and King Nebuchadnezzar (Dan. 1-4).

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.” Romans 13:1-7 ESV

In contrast to conspiracism, the Bible teaches us that God ultimately “removes kings and sets up kings” (Dan. 2:21), and that “the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will” (Dan. 4:17; Dan. 4:25). Proverbs 21:1 says, “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.” We either believe the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God or we don’t. The assumptions and implications of conspiracism challenge the infallibility of the Bible and the sovereignty of God in the affairs of men.

You Become What You Behold

If anyone is behind conspiracism, it is the devil. He is also behind any evil in the truths that conspiracism does manage to become aware of. As Christians, we should not be unaware of the devil’s schemes, and we understand that he is working behind the scenes to advance his own agenda in the Earth. But when a person spends themselves beholding the devil and his work, they begin to exalt evil in their life more than anything else. It is a spiritual law that whatever a person focuses on increases in their perspective. If you focus on and wait upon God, and meditate on His works and ways, He will begin to consume your life and perspective. You begin to see Him in control as the King over every king. You begin to understand, as David did, that, “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psa. 24:1). In other words, whatever or whomever you set your heart’s gaze upon will eventually fill your heart and mind. It was for this reason that Jesus said,

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” Matthew 6:22-23 ESV

You control your own eye, and if you devote it to searching out darkness then you have taken yourself off course. You are responsible to maintain control over your perspective. Jesus reveals that if you don’t keep your perspective healthy, you will ruin your own life. Your perspective is never healthy if it opposes a proper Biblical worldview. This is why Jesus rebuked Peter saying, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man” (Mat. 16:23). It was for this same reason that Paul said, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Col. 3:2).

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV

As Bill Johnson eloquently states, “Darkness is completely inferior to light. Most of the church has too big of a devil.” And, “complaining is to the devil what praise is to God.” He also says, “We will always reflect the nature of the world we are most aware of,” because your “faith is agreement that empowers the reality of what you believe to manifest in your life.” Therefore, “We are not to live in reaction to the devil. We are to live in response to God.” The attitudes and mindsets that are inspired by conspiracism eventually cripple a person’s ability to see anything but darkness and compels them to live in an ongoing reaction to the devil.

Good News vs. Conspiracism

Does this mean that we should ignore evil and choose to believe that everything is okay when it is not? No! As Christians, it means that we must come to understand that our battle is not against flesh and blood and that God reigns supreme. We must live from the foundation that Christ has won the victory (Rev. 3:21), disarmed every power and authority (Col. 2:15), that His enemies are being a made footstool for His feet (1Cor. 15:25-27), and that our purpose is to proclaim the Good News of His Kingdom and demonstrate His victory throughout the whole Earth (1Cor. 15:57; Mark 16:15-20).

The Good News is extremely good; news full of life, faith, hope, and love. Yet, nothing about conspiracism even appears to be good news. Nothing about it edifies, encourages, or exhorts the Church. Jesus didn’t preach the message of conspiracism, even though the political culture of that day was far more dire than ours is today. Neither did any of the Apostles preach a message other than the Good News of the Kingdom and of Christ. The Bible speaks very strongly against embracing the mindset of conspiracism because it denies the sovereign rule of God while promoting fear, especially the fear of man.

“For the Lord spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: 12 “Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. 13 But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.” Isaiah 8:11-13 ESV

Do people conspire? Of course. Men plot and conspire to do all sorts of things. Jesus conspired to do the Father’s will. And there are indeed men conspiring to accomplish evil goals. Many such goals are being carried out now, such as, desensitizing our culture from right and wrong, allowing the massacre of millions of innocent children under the name of abortion for mainly selfish convenience and labeling it “women’s rights”, and authoring school books that teach a generation to think from a humanistic perspective. People are working together to accomplish their agenda, on many different levels. None of this is new, and none of this is surprising.

Men conspired to build the tower of Babel in defiance to God, and He thwarted their plans (Gen. 11:1-9). A king named Herod conspired to eliminate the threat of the prophesied King of the Earth being born into the world by killing all male children in the area under a certain age (Mat. 2). God thwarted his plan as well. You see, evil men do evil things, and evil spirits often influence and empower them to accomplish what would otherwise be impossible. All of this has become normal in our world, in the sense that it has been this way throughout all of recorded history after Adam ushered sin and death into the Earth by disobeying God (Rom. 5:12-14). But God came to Earth as the man, Jesus Christ, and triumphed over sin and death in order to reconcile the world to Himself (Col. 1:20, 2Cor. 5:19). The Bible says that He restored the Kingdom of God in the Earth and that there will be no end to the increase of his Kingdom and of peace (Isaiah 9:6-7). That is very good news.

What Is A Conspiracist?

There are many who embrace the ideas and claims of conspiracism simply because they trust what others have personally presented to them, or they believe the ideas which are displayed as facts in documentaries or entertainment movies. Therefore, I do not consider them to be “conspiracists,” and I do not believe that they typically exemplify the attributes which are common in a conspiracist. Most of those who believe in super-conspiracy theories are simply trusting and repeating what they have heard, while a conspiracist is one who has become a source and voice for those others who more casually embrace their ideas. A conspiracist is a person who fully develops and employs conspiracism as an ideology.

13 Reasons Christians Should Reject Conspiracism

1. The Word of God directly opposes conspiracism.

This should be the only reason that a Christian needs. The Bible specifically and strongly rejects it and the fruit it produces in people’s lives. (Especially according to Isa. 8:11-13; 1Tim. 1:3-7; 1Tim. 4:7; 1Tim. 6:3-5.)

2. Conspiracism defines it’s own worldview instead of conforming to a Biblical worldview.

Conspiracism has no firm foundation or basis outside of itself. For this reason, no two conspiracists believe exactly the same things. There are many versions and possible combinations of ideas from which the conspirator picks and chooses for unclear reasons. A conspiracist with Christian convictions must re-interpret the Word of God if they are to find any justification, thereby violating the traditional Biblical understanding. While the Bible tells us that our real fight is not against flesh and blood, super-conspiracies promote flesh and blood to the forefront.

It was by aligning with the will of the Father that Jesus triumphed over the enemy, and it will be the same for us as we cooperate with the finished work of Christ. If we imagine that preaching conspiracism is doing the Father’s will, we need to look again at Jesus’s life and go back to imitating Him. His way is the best way. In fact, it is the only way.

3. Conspiracism contradicts the understanding that God rules the kingdom of men, thereby rejecting the sovereignty of God.

The Bible clearly shows that God gives authority into the hands of men whom He empowers to rule (Dan. 2:21, Dan. 4:17; Dan. 4:25, Rom. 13:1-7), including many ungodly kings who have ultimately served His purpose. Some of those kings even came to understand that God rules over all and His Kingdom will never be shaken or overthrown (Examples: Dan. 1-6).

Conspiracism rejects the heart and lifestyle of David who refused to defy King Saul, even after Saul had turned from God and worked hard to thwart the purposes of God under the influence of an evil spirit (1Sam. 16:14-23; 1Sam. 18:10; 1Sam. 19:9; 1Sam. 28:8). David remained zealous to honor, to the extent of mourning, weeping, and fasting over the death of Saul (2Sam. 1:11-12). Even at news of Saul’s death, David still regarded him as the Lord’s Anointed (2Sam. 1:14).

4. Conspiracism is what a victim mindset looks like when it is fully developed.

A victim mindset blames others for their problems and refuses to take responsibility for their own life. A victim mindset is basic scapegoating, while conspiracism is scapegoating on a large scale. Conspiracism takes it to the logical extreme by blaming some untouchable elite group for the conditions of life and culture instead of attempting to make any positive impact toward good. Please remember, there is a difference between a conspiracist and a person who simply believes and repeats what they have heard.

Conspiracism may fulfill a need for the conspirator to project their own unwanted ills onto a greater evil, thus minimizing their own faults by imagining they are exemplified in others, or at least justifying themselves through blaming their environment and culture. Conspiracism never empowers people to move forward, but instead it places demands on them while condemning them for failing to do what the conspiracist does not even do themselves. It stems from the idea that other people should make them happy, and it results in complaining about things that are outside of their control. These attitudes begin to empower the devil to affect how they view the world, especially how they view authority figures.

5. Conspiracism eventually opposes Christian character, especially in the area of respecting and honoring authority.

The conspiracist seeks to find a justifiable excuse not to honor or respect authority which God clearly established, or those who fill those positions. They find it necessary to disregard or explain-away Scripture passages such as 1Pet. 2:17, Rom. 12:9-21, and especially Rom. 13:1-7. They fail to recognize that Jesus, along with all of the New Testament authors and many Old Testament authors, lived in societies filled with corruption and ruled over by ungodly kings. The Bible delivers a perspective, attitude, and message that opposes that which conspiracism promotes.

6. Conspiracism places extraordinary faith in evil men and the power of darkness, while diminishing trust in God.

Again, remember that there is a difference between a conspiracist and most who believe their theories. Conspiracism tends to place ruling leaders in an elite rank where they are eventually despised for their authority when they fail to live up to some form of idealism which the conspiracist had hoped for. They are then glorified by conspiracism in the sense that they are portrayed like gods with the power to manipulate nations like puppets on a string. The conspiracist does not understand the realities of leadership and conspiracism never produces true leaders itself since it is ruled by a victim mindset.

7. Conspiracism predictably mistrusts anything that an authority claims publicly, unless it supports their pre-existing theories.

Since the conspiracist automatically opposes authority, by default they also oppose any official statement that one in authority makes. Therefore, they often claim that the official story is a cover-up of the truth. They often reject first-hand accounts and evidence in favor of intangible claims and opinions which they regard as facts. The conspiracist would say that every record that contradicts their theory does so because it’s author has an agenda or is blindly promoting that agenda; that is, unless that record happens to be useful to their theory in some way. In other words, there is no impartial evaluation of evidence to find truth, which is the scientific method. The conspiracist simply rejects anything that opposes their theory while trumpeting anything that helps promote it.

8. There is no need to argue over supposed facts, truths, and proofs, when conspiracism relies upon a faulty premise.

Facts need substance, or foundational evidence. In other words, what makes something a fact? It requires comparison to an unmovable foundation, which allows them to be approved as truthful. Therefore, it is unnecessary to argue supposed facts that the conspiracist quotes in support of their theories when they have no supporting foundation to rest upon. Conspiracies remain theories for a reason: they create conditions that do not allow them to be disproved, which in turn makes them unverifiable as well. Impartial observance will reveal that the sources of evidence that the conspiracist points to in defense of their theories are often nothing more than assumptions. Assumptions are not foundations, although they can be reasonably secure if they are based on something solid, such as, the Word of God and a Biblical worldview. Assumptions help us to apply the truths that we are aware of and to interpret new things that we do not understand. To a degree, everyone builds upon assumptions, but those assumptions must never become irreplaceable or confused with truth itself.

9. Conspiracism would require large, multi-generational groups of evil super-humans to maintain their secrecy, unity, and advancement.

Conspiracism necessarily requires such a massive quantity of evil people to be involved and in extreme unity and secrecy over long periods of time that it defies reality. It erroneously imagines that the basic controlling power of the sinful nature of fallen mankind would not cause things like personal greed and selfish ambition to eventually derail the mass unity and secrecy behind super-conspiracy theories. Those who do not belong to Christ are, in fact, fully controlled by their sinful nature and slaves to it’s demands (Rom. 6:6, Rom. 6:20, Rom. 8:15, Gal. 4:3, 2Pet. 2:19). Not even groups within the body of Christ, the new creation sharing the same Spirit of Christ, has yet demonstrated the ability to maintain such unity of mind and purpose for such extended periods of time.

Conspiracism attributes too much power and capability to men who are dead in their sin and slaves to unrighteousness (Eph. 2:1-3, Rom. 6:16-23). Isaiah 2:22 says, “Stop regarding man in whose nostrils is breath, for of what account is he?” Even people who are working under the power of the enemy are cooperating with a defeated foe and a kingdom that cannot stand. It is absurdly unbiblical to imagine that God’s Kingdom will not continue to advance and ultimately fill the Earth (Isaiah 6:3; Isaiah 9:6-7; Dan. 2:34-35; Dan. 2:44-45; Num. 14:21; Psa. 72:19; Hab. 2:14; Rev. 2:27; Rev. 12:5; Rev. 19:15; Rev. 20:2-3). The Biblical perspective is a victorious one.

10. Conspiracism defies logic and reason, relying primarily on emotional conviction to discern what it considers to be facts and truths.

There are two main ways that truth is discerned by a conspiracist: emotional conviction and opposition to authority. Once there is distrust of authority, evaluating authorities becomes an emotional decision as well. To the conspiracist, all authorities become either heroes or villains. Heroes will only remain so as long as they do not voice anything that opposes the strong claims of the conspiracist. Once again, conspirators put far too much faith in men, exalting them to impossible standards.

11. Conspiracism needs to prove it’s own theories by pointing to other theories with additional unprovable convictions, creating a cycle of illogical reason.

This perfectly exemplifies the purpose of “Occam’s razor,” which is one way to test the potential truth of opposing stories. Occam’s razor questions whether the alternate story explains more than the primary story, or if it is only more complicated and less feasible. In other words, a greater degree of truth is normally found in the more simple and straightforward explanation. Lies and imaginations tend to exaggerate and over-complicate truth. Every person who has worked with or raised young children should be able to attest to the reality of this conclusion. In addition, the larger and more involved a conspiracy becomes, the more difficult it is to accomplish. Leading large groups of people will demonstrate the practical difficulties and reality of this conclusion as well.

12. Conspirators commonly point to news stories and sources that promote what they believe while denying everything else.

Conspiracists will often refer to the media by terms such as, “state-run media,” believing them to be possibly paid-off, coerced, or otherwise manipulated to psychologically influence people to play along with the agenda of the ruling elite. Hypocritically, they will also cite news stories from those same sources which they claim reveal facts proving their own theories. As already revealed, this is because there are specific and limited reasons they trust any story or source: it adds support for prior assumptions, it is in opposition to authority or to the official story, and it fuels their own emotional response.

13. Conspiracism defeats it’s own theories with it’s own logic every time it is critically evaluated.

Even though it’s methods of proof and evaluation are faulty, applying them in an unbiased manner breaks super-conspiracy theories without fail. For instance, both prior belief and emotional decisions can take a person in any direction. It assigns perfect calculated planning to what is often selfishness, greed, chance, imperfection, and human error, while defying the possibility that such perfect ability could accomplish other things, such as landing on the moon. When it tries to utilize logic to wield facts, it inevitably needs to make great leaps of logic to do so. In other words, it has no solid root or foundation.

Practical Conclusions

There are other practical reasons why experts and professionals have long dismissed conspiracism. Yet, the worst thing about conspiracism is when Christians embrace it and begin to fear what man can and will do instead of looking to God as their King, Source, and Savior.

We must love the conspiracist from the heart, in both word and in deed to the extent that they allow us to show it. But we must not play games with solid Bible doctrine or be subtly influenced to disregard our firm foundation in favor of speculation and myth. We must not fear man, but God alone. We must pray fervently for those who are lost in the futility of conspiracism, asking God to shine His light brightly in their hearts to expose real Truth to them instead of darkness, opening their eyes to see Him in all His glory. Pray that they begin seeing what it is that God is doing in the Earth and learn to live in response to Him alone. His Kingdom Keep Coming! His Will Be Done.

Everyone wants love! Love is the root of all that is good and true. Love is patient, kind, doesn’t envy or boast, isn’t arrogant or rude, doesn’t insist on it’s own way, isn’t irritable or resentful. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. You could write a lifetime of books expounding on it and still not fully comprehend it. And then there’s a certain aspect of love revealed right in the middle of 1 Corinthians chapter 13 that always seems to get tucked away and overlooked – squashed between the warm fuzzy parts.

“[Love] does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.” 1Corinthians 13:6 ESV

More Than A Warm Fuzzy

Love rejoices with the truth. But true love does not rejoice at wrongdoing. Many of us have been taught a very one-sided, humanistic view of love that really isn’t Biblical or healthy. For instance, I have heard people say, “we just have to love people where they are.” While there is a lot of truth in that, the intention behind that statement too often means, “pretend everything is perfectly fine the way they are so that we don’t rock their boat.” In other words, confronting the reality of their life seems mean and unloving. Loving people where they are is good in itself, but it all goes bad when we pervert what that means because we’re missing this key characteristics of love in our own lives: love does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but it does rejoice with the truth.

God exemplifies true love. It is who He is. Amos 3:3 teaches that two cannot walk together unless they are in agreement. God will not walk in step with you; you must walk in step with Him. The only way to do so is in spirit and in truth, which ultimately means you must face His conviction. Even His conviction is true love, which extends into correcting us with discipline when we are not in agreement with Him. God defines love, and since He cannot rejoice in wrongdoing, true love cannot either. It can only rejoice with truth.

“If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.” Proverbs 1:23 ESV

The Road of Reproof

God loves you, and He wants to speak personally to you. In order to do that, to bring you to that place, He reproves (corrects, convicts, scolds) you because He cannot rejoice at wrongdoing. Therefore, reproof is part of love. Now this doesn’t mean you should go around yelling at and scolding everyone that isn’t living the way you think they should. It means something much more personal and intimate than that. It’s meant for you. You will have to walk the road of reproof to get to the table of blessing. There is no other way of approaching it.

“Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.” Proverbs 13:24 ESV

“For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” Hebrews 12:6 ESV

He who loves, is diligent (steady, earnest) to discipline. I imagine some of you are saying, “Yeah, true. But you should only judge and discipline your own children.” It is true that each of us has our own unique sphere of authority, but my purpose in this article is not to focus on that issue. My intent is to unfold the aspect of love revealed in 1 Corinthians 13:6. Before going any further, it would be beneficial to note that regardless of who has the right to discipline, when the person on the other end receives it well, the Bible calls them wise.

“Let the godly strike me! It will be a kindness! If they correct me, it is soothing medicine. Don’t let me refuse it. But I pray constantly against the wicked and their deeds.” Psalm 141:5 (NLT)

“The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise. Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.” Proverbs 15:31-32 ESV

The Way of Life

“For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,” Proverbs 6:23 ESV

When the Bible says that discipline is the way of life, it literally means that it is the road leading to life. The Hebrew word in this scripture translated as, “way”, literally means road, distance, journey, manner, habit, or direction (Strong’s, H1870). Yet, many of us haven’t understood this part of the journey, this aspect of love called “reproof” and “discipline.” We have had so many bad examples in our own lives which we naturally see through like a window when we try to view God and understand what He means by this.

Many of us associate discipline with anger and failure, but that’s not at all the way God intends it. We have to grow beyond our experience-based view so that we can see the truth of it more clearly and, in turn, demonstrate a better example ourselves. Until we learn to embrace discipline, we tend to react in a negative way toward God and others because they cause us to confront our own error or wrongdoing. We often don’t want to listen to reproof because it makes us feel like a failure, ashamed, or even angry. Some may even think that it is a sign of anger toward us.

However, it is purely love when God confronts our error and wrongdoing. He loves us enough to confront those things that are standing between us. He desires to bring us past those barriers and into a place where there is nothing to hinder us from receiving His blessing. All of the warm fuzzy parts are waiting for us, but God disciplines us to remove issues in our lives that are preventing us from having what He is already holding out with an open hand.

“Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is honored.” Pro 13:18 ESV

“A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool.” Proverbs 17:10 ESV

You can’t make yourself qualified to go straight to all the blessing without encountering reproof. You must surrender to Him, both to His blessing and reproof – to His love. It’s His way or no way at all. It is the way of life. There is no instant lottery ticket method for getting only the warm fuzzy parts without walking the path of discipline.

Be Unlimited

So love doesn’t rejoice in wrongdoing, and this is because God defines love. Yet there are some who embrace the reproof of God, but have not learned to embrace the blessing of His love. They have not understood that love also rejoices with truth. God delights in truth from our deepest inward parts.

“Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.” Psalm 51:6 ESV

So then, there are two sides to the same coin. If you separate them you are wrong. You would have to destroy the coin in order to separate the two sides, and it would be useless and ineffective to accomplish it’s purpose. It is not any different with love. Without both sides of love, it is limited from accomplishing what it is intended to accomplish. Love has purpose!

We love it when we’re walking in truth and God’s rejoicing with us. But we tend to hate the other side of the coin because we haven’t understood that it is also love. If we are going to proceed to maturity we have to come to the point where we love the correction and discipline of the Lord. We must understand that it is part of His love for us. God disciplines us because He delights in us!

Give To God What Is God’s

Here’s what it comes down to: as you mature in the Lord you should reach a point where you can honestly embrace His discipline. Not in a sadistic sense, but from a place of understanding and a desire to grow in intimacy with him. You see clearly that He reproves you because He desperately loves you and wants you close.

“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.” Proverbs 12:1 ESV

“He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck, will suddenly be broken beyond healing.” Proverbs 29:1 ESV

If we only accept one side of the coin, we’ll end up dysfunctional and God’s love will not be able to fully affect us because we are not allowing Him to fully love us. Be thankful for the reproof of the Lord. Every time you embrace it you will change, grow, mature, and overcome the very things that you could not on your own. He is setting a table of blessing for you and filling you with good things. He is showering you with praise as He rejoices over you and the truth that flows from your heart. Let Him fully love you!

From the moment you understand Jesus is the Christ, he immediately speaks plainly of the cross and begins leading you to the place of surrender into the hands of God. Every step forward into the fullness of Christ will bring you back to that place where Jesus is pointing you to the cross again. It is the place where you will transition from penalty to freedom, from surrender to power, from obedience to favor. When you embrace the cross, you embrace the resurrection power of the Spirit of God to make you His own.

And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30 And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. Mark 8:27-35

Revelation & Requirement

Jesus asks you, “Who do people say that I am?” This is where you begin to face the decision you must make. The kindness of God has wrecked your ability to walk away from Him without knowing who He is. And then he looks you squarely in the eye, and asks, “Who do you say that I am?” He is the center of everything, the full expression of the light and the glory of God. He is the eternal One, God manifested among us as a man, living under the limitations of mankind, yet uncorrupted by sin. Exposed to all and tempted in every way, yet he never surrendered to sin. Finally, in one profound act of absolute surrender, He took your place, paying the price of death that must be paid for your own sin. He is your Christ!

From the moment you realize who Jesus is, He turns and points up that dark and lonely hill where He laid it all on the line, speaking plainly to you for the first time about his suffering, rejection, and surrender. He talks openly about the incredibly steep cost. Just like Peter, your initial response is, “Why? It don’t understand. This cannot be right! It doesn’t make sense.” You fight with the inevitable truth, wrestling with everything you thought you knew. And just then, He leans in close and compels you with the words, “Follow me!”

Follow Further

He said those words to you once before when He called you aside from your meaningless life, grabbing your attention with hope. He urged you to believe His words and works. He caused you to let your walls fall down and take a chance at believing for something good again. In all of this, He required little of you. He asked only that you hear his words and take them to heart. Now He sees that you have seen the truth of who He is, and He calls you to follow further. He shows you His cross and tells you that it is yours as well. You must deny yourself to follow Him. You must surrender control of your life to God in faith that He will raise you up and awaken you to a new life — a life not your own.

It is here that your desire for self-preservation overwhelms you, and you fight for your very life. You see the severity of your own sin, the darkness of your own heart. You look for the hope and happiness that once filled your vision. You recoil suddenly, taking a step back in shock and horror. You assume that either it is not really God’s will, or you simply misunderstood. After all, you learned that He is bringing you hope, not death. You find a way to justify keeping things as they have been. You even go so far as to rebuke the very plan of God, expecting Jesus to pat you on the back and tell you it is okay. But instead, Jesus rebukes you and tells you sternly that you are living your life for yourself. You are setting your mind on the things that you desire. He brought you to the intersection of the rest of your life, His cross, and here He requires denial. You must either deny him or deny yourself. You have no other option.

Relent & Awaken

When you walk away, you convince yourself that you are not denying him. You told him so boldly, “I will never deny you! I would even die, but I would not deny you.” And yet, you face the cross and lose your resolve, walking away in shame, anger, and turmoil. You go home and go to sleep, hoping to wake up and find that it was all a dream. You never fully wake up, walking around in a daze while Jesus yells to you, “Wake up! You’re sleeping! Wake up from your daze and slumber! Return to My cross and follow Me.” You try not to hear but His tugging on your heart plagues you. You go back to doing all the things you first did when you began following Him. You remind yourself of all the good times, the times when you begin to see a whole new hope, feeling only His gentle love. You surround yourself with people who haven’t yet encountered the cross in their life. You try to behave and think like them, putting all your energy and thoughts into it. You try to forget the cross, but your joy steadily melts away. Your pursuit of God becomes an attempt to maintain positivity, happiness, and emotional calm.

You wander in this aimless game until, by the grace of God, you find yourself at the foot of the cross again. Suddenly you hear His words echo in your heart, “Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me!” It will never make sense until you relent, saying as Christ did, “Not my will, but Yours, oh God.”

And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:8

For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. 18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:17-18

Steps Ordered By God

As you yield in surrender, you find rest from your striving, fighting, and aimless wandering. As you give up and fall backwards into His arms, He catches you because you are trusting Him. It is in this sacrifice of surrender that you find complete acceptance and approval from God through Christ. The pleasure and power of God touches the core of your life and you wake up to a whole new world. A world without the limits and forceful demands of sin and death. You begin living the life of an over-comer, walking in the victorious steps of Christ. You find that His are the steps of a righteous man, ordered by God. Jesus turns to looks at you again, saying, “Walk this way! Follow Me!”

A Sermon (No. 207). Delivered on Sabbath Morning, August 1, 1858, by the REV. C. H. Spurgeon at the Music Hall, Royal Surrey Gardens.

Introduction

But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me. But to Israel he saith, all day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.—Romans 10:20-21.

DOUBTLESS THESE WORDS primarily refer to the casting away of the Jews, and to the choosing of the Gentiles. The Gentiles were a people who sought not after God, but lived in idolatry; nevertheless, Jehovah was pleased in these latter times to send the gospel of his grace to them: while the Jews who had long enjoyed the privileges of the Word of God, on account of their disobedience and rebellion were cast away. I believe, however, that while this is the primary object of the words of our text, yet, as Calvin says, the truth taught in the text is a type of a universal fact. As God did choose the people who knew him not, so hath he chosen, in the abundance of his grace, to manifest his salvation to men who are out of the way; while, on the other hand, the men who are lost, after having heard the Word, are lost because of their wilful sin; for God doth all the day long “stretch forth his hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.”

The system of truth is not one straight line, but two. No man will ever get a right view of the gospel until he knows how to look at the two lines at once. I am taught in one book to believe that what I sow I shall reap: I am taught in another place, that “it is not of him that willeth nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.” I see in one place, God presiding over all in providence; and yet I see, and I cannot help seeing, that man acts as he pleases, and that God has left his actions to his own will, in a great measure. Now, if I were to declare that man was so free to act, that there was no presidence of God over his actions, I should be driven very near to Atheism; and if, on the other hand, I declare that God so overrules all things, as that man is not free enough to be responsible, I am driven at once into Antinomianism or fatalism. That God predestines, and that man is responsible, are two things that few can see. They are believed to be inconsistent and contradictory; but they are not. It is just the fault of our weak judgment. Two truths cannot be contradictory to each other. If, then, I find taught in one place that everything is fore-ordained, that is true; and if I find in another place that man is responsible for all his actions, that is true; and it is my folly that leads me to imagine that two truths can ever contradict each other. These two truths, I do not believe, can ever be welded into one upon any human anvil, but one they shall be in eternity: they are two lines that are so nearly parallel, that the mind that shall pursue them farthest, will never discover that they converge; but they do converge, and they will meet somewhere in eternity, close to the throne of God, whence all truth doth spring.

Now, this morning I am about to consider the two doctrines. In the 20th verse, we have taught us the doctrines of sovereign grace—”But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.” In the next verse, we have the doctrine of man’s guilt in rejecting God. “To Israel he saith, all day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.”

Sovereign Grace

I. First, then, DIVINE SOVEREIGNTY AS EXEMPLIFIED IN SALVATION. If any man be saved, he is saved by Divine grace, and by Divine grace alone; and the reason of his salvation is not to be found in him, but in God. We are not saved as the result of anything that we do or that we will; but we will and do as the result of God’s good pleasure, and the work of his grace in our hearts. No sinner can prevent God; that is, he cannot go before him, cannot anticipate him; God is always first in the matter of salvation. He is before our convictions, before our desires, before our fears, before our hopes. All that is good or ever will be good in us, is preceded by the grace of God, and is the effect of a Divine cause within.

Now in speaking of God’s gracious acts of salvation, this morning, I notice first, that they are entirely unmerited. You will see that the people here mentioned certainly did not merit God’s grace. They found him, but they never sought for him; he was made manifest to them, but they never asked for him. There never was a man saved yet who merited it. Ask all the saints of God, and they will tell you that their former life was spent in the lusts of the flesh; that in the days of their ignorance, they revolted against God and turned back from his ways, that when they were invited to come to him they despised the invitation, and, when warned, cast the warning behind their back. They will tell you that their being drawn by God, was not the result of any merit before conversion; for some of them, so far from having any merit, were the very vilest of the vile: they plunged into the very kennel of sin; they were not ashamed of all the things of which it would be a shame for us to speak; they were ringleaders in crime, very princes in the ranks of the enemy; and yet sovereign grace came to them, and they were brought to know the Lord. They will tell you that it was not the result of anything good in their disposition, for although they trust that there is now something excellent implanted in them, yet in the days of their flesh they could see no one quality which was not perverted to the service of Satan. Ask them whether they think they were chosen of God because of their courage; they will tell you, no; if they had courage it was defaced, for they were courageous to do evil. Question them whether they were chosen of God because of their talent; they will tell you, no; they had that talent, but they prostituted it to the service of Satan. Question them whether they were chosen because of the openness and generosity of their disposition; they will tell you that that very openness of temper, and that very generosity of disposition, led them to plunge deeper into the depths of sin, than they otherwise would have done, for they were “hail fellow, well met,” with every evil man, and ready to drink and join every jovial party which should come in their way. There was in them no reason whatever why God should have mercy upon them, and the wonder to them is that he did not cut them down in the midst of their sins, blot out their names from the book of life, and sweep them into the gulf where the fire burneth, that shall devour the wicked. But some have said that God chooses his people because he foresees that after he chooses them, they will do this, that, and the other, which shall be meritorious and excellent. Refer again to the people of God, and they will tell you that since their conversion they have had much to weep over. Although they can rejoice that God has begun the good work in them, they often tremble lest it should not be God’s work at all. They will tell you that if they are abundant in faith yet there are times when they are superabundant in unbelief; that if sometimes they are full of works of holiness, yet there are times when they weep many tears to think that those very acts of holiness were stained with sin. The Christian will tell you that he weeps over his very tears; he feels that there is filth even in the best of desires; that he has to pray to God to forgive his prayers, for there is sin in the midst of his supplications, and that he has to sprinkle even his best offerings with the atoning blood, for he never else can bring an offering without spot or blemish. You shall appeal to the brightest saint, to the man whose presence in the midst of society is like the presence of an angel, and he will tell you that he is still ashamed of himself. “Ah!” he will say, “you may praise me, but I cannot praise myself, you speak well of me, you applaud me, but if you knew my heart you would see abundant reason to think of me as a poor sinner saved by grace, who hath nothing whereof to glory, and must bow his head and confess his iniquities in the sight of God.” Grace, then is entirely unmerited.

Again, the grace of God is sovereign. By that word we mean that God has an absolute right to give that grace where he chooses, and to withhold it when he pleases. He is not bound to give it to any man, much less to all men; and if he chooses to give it to one man and not to another, his answer is, “Is thine eye evil because mine eye is good? Can I not do as I will with mine own? I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy.” Now, I want you to notice the sovereignty of Divine grace as illustrated in the text: “I was found of them that sought me not, I was made manifest to them that asked not after thee.” You would imagine that if God gave his grace to any he would wait until he found them earnestly seeking him. You would imagine that God in the highest heavens would say, “I have mercies, but I will leave men alone, and when they feel their need of these mercies and seek me diligently with their whole heart, day and night, with tears, and vows, and supplications, then will I bless them, but not before.” But, beloved, God saith no such thing. It is true he doth bless them that cry unto him, but he blesses them before they cry, for their cries are not their own cries, but cries which he has put into their lips; their desires are not of their own growth, but desires which he has cast like good seed into the soil of their hearts. God saves the men that do not seek him. Oh, wonder of wonders! It is mercy indeed when God saves a seeker; but how much greater mercy when he seeks the lost himself! Mark the parable of Jesus Christ concerning the lost sheep; it does not run thus: “A certain man had a hundred sheep, and one of them did go astray. And he tarried at home, and lo, the sheep came back, and he received it joyfully and said to his friends, rejoice, for the sheep that I have lost is come back.” No; he went after the sheep: it never would have come after him; it would have wandered farther and farther away. He went after it; over hills of difficulty, down valleys of despondency he pursued its wandering feet, and at last he laid hold of it; he did not drive it before him, he did not lead it, but he carried it himself all the way, and when he brought it home he did not say, the sheep is come back,” but, “I have found the sheep which was lost.” Men do not seek God first; God seeks them first; and if any of you are seeking him to-day it is because he has first sought you. If you are desiring him he desired you first, and your good desires and earnest seeking will not be the cause of your salvation, but the effects of previous grace given to you. “Well,” says another, “I should have thought that although the Saviour might not require an earnest seeking and sighing and groaning, and a continuous searching, after him, yet certainly he would have desired and demanded that every man, before he had grace, should ask for it.” That, indeed, beloved, seems natural, and God will give grace to them that ask for it; but mark, the text says that he was manifested “to them that asked not for him.” That is to say, before we ask, God gives us grace. The only reason why any man ever begins to pray is because God has put previous grace in his heart which leads him to pray. I remember, when I was converted to God, I was an Arminian thoroughly. I thought I had begun the good work myself, and I used sometimes to sit down and think, “Well, I sought the Lord four years before I found him,” and I think I began to compliment myself upon the fact that I had perseveringly entreated of him in the midst of much discouragement. But one day the thought struck me, “How was it you came to seek God?” and in an instant the answer came from my soul, “Why, because he led me to do it; he must first have shown me my need of him, or else I should never have sought him; he must have shown me his preciousness, or I never should have thought him worth seeking;” and at once I saw the doctrines of grace as clear as possible. God must begin. Nature can never rise above itself. You put water into a reservoir, and it will rise as high as that, but no higher if let alone. Now, it is not in human nature to seek the Lord. Human nature is depraved, and therefore, there must be the extraordinary pressure of the Holy Spirit put upon the heart to lead us first to ask for mercy. But mark, we do not know an thing about that, while the Spirit is operating; we find that out afterwards. We ask as much as if we were asking all of ourselves. Our business is to seek the Lord as if there were no Holy Spirit at all. But although we do not know it, there must always be a previous motion of the Spirit in our heart, before there will be a motion of our heart towards him.

No sinner can be beforehand with thee,
Thy grace is most sovereign, most rich, and most free.

Let me give you an illustration. You see that man on his horse surrounded by a body of troopers. How proud he is, and how he reins up his horse with conscious dignity. Sir, what have you got there? What are those despatches you treasure up with so much care? “Oh, sir, I have that in my hand that will vex the church of God in Damascus. I have dragged the fellows into the synagogue, both men and women; I have scourged them, and compelled them to blaspheme; and I have this commission from the high priest to drag them to Jerusalem, that I may put them to death.” Saul! Saul! have you no love for Christ? “Love to him! No. When they stoned Stephen, I took care of the witnesses’ clothes, and I rejoiced to do it. I wish I had had the crucifying of their Master, for I hate them with perfect hatred, and I breathe out threatenings and slaughter against them.” What do you say of this man? If he be saved, will you not grant that it must be some Divine sovereignty that converts him? Look at poor Pilate, how much there was that was hopeful in him. He was willing to save the Master, but he feared and trembled. If we had had our choice, we should have said, “Lord, save Pilate, he does not want to kill Christ, he labours to let him escape; but slay the bloodthirsty Saul, he is, the very chief of sinners.” “No,” says God, “I will do as I will with mine own.” The heavens open, and the brightness of glory descends—brighter than the noon-day sun. Stunned with the light he falls to the ground, and a voice is heard addressing him, “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” He rises up; God appears to him: “Lo, I have made thee a chosen vessel to bear my name among the Gentiles.” Is not that sovereignty—sovereign grace, without any previous seeking? God was found of him that sought not for him; he manifested himself to one that asked him not. Some will say, that was it miracle; but it is one that is repeated every day in the week. I knew a man once, who had not been to the house of God for a long time; and one Sunday morning, having been to market to buy a pair of ducks for his Sunday dinner, he happened to see a house of God opened as he was passing by. “Well,” he thought, “I will hear what these fellows are up to.” He went inside; the hymn that was being sung struck his attention; he listened to the sermon, forgot his ducks, discovered his own character, went home, and threw himself upon his knees before God, and after a short time it pleased God to give him joy and peace in believing. That man had nothing in him to begin with, nothing that could have led you to imagine he ever would be saved, but simply because God would have it so, he struck the effectual blow of grace, and the man was brought to himself. But we are, each of us who are saved, the very people who are the best illustrations of the matter. To this day, my wonder is, that ever the Lord should have chosen thee. I cannot make it out; and my only answer to the question is, “Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight.”

I have now, I think, stated the doctrine pretty plainly. Let me only say a few words about it. Some people are very much afraid of this truth. They say, “It is true, I dare say, but still you ought not to preach it before a mixed assembly; it is very well for the comfort of God’s people, but it is to be very carefully handled, and not to be publicly preached upon.” Very well, sir, I leave you to settle that matter with my Master. He gave me this great book to preach from, and I cannot preach from anything else. If he has put anything in it you think is not fit, go and complain to him, and not to me. I am simply his servant, and if his errand that I am to tell is objectionable, I cannot help it. If I send my servant to the door with a message, and he delivers it faithfully, he does not deserve to be scolded. Let me have the blame, not the servant. So I say; blame my Master, and not me, for I do but proclaim his message. “No,” says one, “it is not to be preached.” But it is to be preached. Every word of God is given by inspiration, and it is profitable for some good end. Does not the Bible say so? Let me tell you, the reason why many of our churches are declining is just because this doctrine has not been preached. Wherever this doctrine has been upheld, it has always been “Down with Popery.” The first reformers held this doctrine and preached it. Well said it Church of England divine to some who railed at him, “Look at your own Luther. Do you not consider him to be the teacher of the Church of England? What Calvin and the other reformers taught is to be found in his book upon the freedom of the will.” Besides, we can point you to a string of ministers from the beginning even until now. Talk of apostolic succession! The man who preaches the doctrines of grace has an apostolic succession indeed. Can we not trace our pedigree through a whole line of men like Newton, and Whitfield, and Owen, and Bunyan, straight away on till we come to Calvin, Luther, and Zwingle; and then we can go back from them to Savonarola, to Jerome of Prague, to Huss, and then back to Augustine, the mighty preacher of Christianity; and from St. Augustine to Paul is but one step. We need not be ashamed of our pedigree; although Calvinists are now considered to be heterodox, we are and ever must be orthodox. It is the old doctrine. Go and buy any puritanical book, and see if you can find Arminianism in it. Search all the book stalls over, and see if you can find one large folio book of olden times that anything in it but the doctrine of the free grace of God. Let this once be brought to bear upon the minds of men, and away go the doctrines of penance and confession, away goes paying for the pardon of your sin. If grace be free and sovereign in the hand of God, down goes the doctrine of priestcraft, away go buying and selling indulgences and such like things; they are swept to the four winds of heaven, and the efficacy of good works is dashed in pieces like Dagon before the ark of the Lord. “Well,” says one, “I like the doctrine; still there are very few that preach it, and those that do are very high.” Very likely; but I care little what anybody calls me. It signifies very little what men call you. Suppose they call you a “hyper,” that does not make you anything wicked, does it? Suppose they call you an Antinomian, that will not make you one. I must confess, however, that there are some men who preach this doctrine who are doing ten thousand times more harm than good, because they don’t preach the next doctrine I am going to proclaim, which is just as true. They have this to be the sail. but they have not the other to be the ballast. They can preach one side but not the other. They can go along with the high doctrine, but they will not preach the whole of the Word. Such men caricature the Word of God. And just let me say here, that it is the custom of a certain body of Ultra-Calvinists, to call those of us who teach that it is the duty of man to repent and believe, “Mongrel Calvinists.” If you hear any of them say so, give them my most respectful compliments, and ask them whether they ever read Calvin’s works in their lives. Not that I care what Calvin said or did not say; but ask them whether they, ever read his works; and if they say “No,” as they must say, for there are forty-eight large voluines, you can tell them, that the man whom they call “a Mongrel Calvinist,” though he has not read them all, has read a very good share of them, and knows their spirit; and he knows that he preaches substantially what Calvin preached—that every doctrine he preaches may be found in Calvin’s Commentaries on some part of Scripture or other. We are TRUE Calvinists, however. Calvin is nobody to us. Jesus Christ and him crucified, and the old fashioned Bible, are our standards. Beloved, let us take God’s Word as it stands. If we find high doctrine there, let it be high; if we find low doctrine, let it be low; let us set up no other standard than the Bible affords.

Man’s Responsibility

II. Now then for the second point. “There now,” says my ultra friend, “he is going to contradict himself.” No, my friend, I am not, I am only going to contradict you. The second point is MAN’S RESPONSIBILITY. “But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.” Now, these people whom God had cast away had been wooed, had been sought, had been entreated to be saved; but they would not, and inasmuch as they were not saved, it was the effect of their disobedience and their gainsaying. That lies clearly enough in the text. When God sent the prophets to Israel, and stretched forth his hands, what was it for? What did he wish them to come to him for? Why, to be saved. “No,” says one, “it was for temporal mercies.” Not so, my friend; the verse before is concerning spiritual mercies, and so is this one, for they refer to the same thing. Now, was God sincere in his offer? God forgive the man that dares to say he was not. God is undoubtedly sincere in every act he did. He sent his prophets, he entreated the people of Israel to lay hold on spiritual things, but they would not, and though he stretched out his hands all the day long, yet they were “a disobedient and gainsaying people,” and would not have his love; and on their head rests their blood.

Now let me notice the wooing of God and of what sort it is. First, it was the most affectionate wooing in the world. Lost sinners who sit under the sound of the gospel are not lost for the want of the most affectionate invitation. God says he stretched out his hands. You know what that means. You have seen the child who is disobedient and will not come to his father. The father puts out his hands, and says, “Come, my child, come; I am ready to forgive you.” The tear is in his eye, and his bowels move with compassion, and he says, “Come, come.” God says this is what he did—”he stretched out his hands.” That is what he has done to some of you. You that are not saved to-day are without excuse, for God stretched out his hands to you, and he said, “Come, come.” Long have you sat beneath the sound of the ministry, and it has been a faithful one, I trust, and a weeping one. Your minister has not forgotten to pray for your souls in secret or to weep over you when no eye saw him, and he has endeavoured to persuade you as an ambassador from God. God is my witness, I have sometimes stood in this pulpit, and I could not have pleaded harder for my own life than I have pleaded with you. In Christ’s name, I have cried, “Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” I have wept over you as the Saviour did, and used his words on his behalf, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often would I have gathered thy children together as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not.” And you know that your conscience has often been touched; you have often been moved; you could not resist it. God was so kind to you; he invited you so affectionately by the Word; he dealt so gently with you by his providence; his hands were stretched out, and you could hear his voice speaking in your ears, “Come unto me, come: come now, let us reason together; though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as wool; though they be red like crimson they shall be whiter than snow.” You have heard him cry, “Ho every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.” You have heard him say with all the affection of a father’s heart, “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him turn unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and unto our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” Oh! God does plead with men that they would be saved, and this day he says to every one of you, “Repent, and be converted for the remission of your sins. Turn ye unto me. Thus saith the Lord of hosts; consider your ways.” And with love divine he woos you as a father woos his child, putting out his hands and crying, “Come unto me, come unto me.” “No,” says one strong-doctrine man, “God never invites all men to himself; he invites none but certain characters.” Stop, sir, that is all you know about it. Did you ever read that parable where it is said, My oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready; come unto the marriage.” And they that were bidden would not come. And did you never read that they all began to make excuse, and that they were punished because they did not accept the invitations. Now, if the invitation is not to be made to anybody, but to the man who will accept it, how can that parable be true? The fact is, the oxen and fatlings are killed; the wedding feast is ready, and the trumpet sounds, “Ho every one that thirsteth, come and eat, come and drink.” Here are the provisions spread, here is an all-sufficiency; the invitation is free; it is a great invitation. “Whosoever will, let him come and take of the water of life freely.” And that invitation is couched in tender words, “Come to me, my child, come to me.” “All day long I have stretched forth my hands.”

And note again, this invitation was very frequent. The words, “all the day long,” may be translated “daily”—”Daily have I stretched forth my hands.” Sinner, God has not called you once to come, and then let you alone, but every day has he been at you; every day has conscience spoken to you; every day has providence warned you, and every Sabbath has the Word of God wooed you. Oh! how much some of you will have to account for at God’s great bar! I cannot now read your characters, but I know there are some of you who will have a terrible account at last. All the day long has God been wooing you. From the first dawn of your life, he wooed you through your mother, and she used to put your little hands together, and teach you to say,

Gentle Jesus meek and mild,
Look upon a little child,
Pity my simplicity;
Suffer me to come to thee.

And in your boyhood God was still stretching out his hands after you. How your Sunday-school teacher endeavoured to bring you to the Saviour! How often your youthful heart was affected; but you put all that away, and you are still untouched by it. How often did your mother speak to you, and your father warn you; and you have forgotten the prayer in that bed-room when you were sick, when your mother kissed your burning forehead, knelt down and prayed to God to spare your life, and then added that prayer, “Lord, save my boy’s soul!” And you recollect the Bible she gave you, when you first went out apprentice, and the prayer she wrote on that yellow front leaf. When she gave it, you did not perhaps know, but you may now; how earnestly she longed after you, that you might be formed anew in Christ Jesus; how she followed you with her prayers, and how she entreated with her God for you. And you have not yet surely forgotten how many Sabbaths you have spent, and how many times you have been warned. Why you have had waggon-loads of sermons wasted on you. A hundred and four sermons you have heard every year, and some of you more, and yet you are still just what you were.

But sinners, sermon hearing is an awful thing unless it is blessed to our souls. If God has kept on stretching out his hands every day and all the day, it will be a hard thing for you when you shall be justly condemned not only for your breaches of the law, but for your wilful rejection of the gospel. It is probable that God will keep on stretching out his hands to you until your hairs grow grey, still continually inviting you: and perhaps when you are nearing death he will still say, “Come unto me, come unto me.” But if you still persist in hardening your heart, if still you reject Christ, I beseech you let nothing make you imagine that you shall go unpunished. Oh! I do tremble sometimes when I think of that class of ministers who tell sinners that they are not guilty if they do not seek the Saviour. How they shall be found innocent at God’s great day I do not know. It seems to be a fearful thing that they should be lulling poor souls into sleep by telling them it is not their duty to seek Christ and repent, but that they may do as they like about that, and that when they perish they will be none the more guilty for having heard the Word. My Master did not say that. Remember how he said, “And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.” Jesus did not talk thus when he spoke to Chorazin and Bethsaida; for he said, “Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.” It was not the way Paul preached. He did not tell sinners that there was no guilt in despising the cross. Hear the apostle’s words once more: “For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward, how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.” Sinner, at the great day of God thou must give an account for every warning thou hast ever had, for every time thou hast read thy Bible, ay, and for every time thou hast neglected to read it; for every Sunday when the house of God was open and thou didst neglect to avail thyself of the opportunity of hearing the Word, and for every time thou didst hear it and didst not improve it. Ye who are careless hearers, are tying faggots for your own burning for ever. Ye that hear and straightway forget, or hear with levity, are digging for yourselves a pit into which ye must be cast. Remember, no one will be responsible for your damnation but yourself, at the last great day. God will not be responsible for it. “As I live saith the Lord”—and that is a great oath—”I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth. but had rather that he should turn unto me and live.” God has done much for you. He sent you his Gospel. You are not born in a heathen land; he has given you the Book of Books; he has given you an enlightened conscience; and if you perish under the sound of the ministry, you perish more fearfully and terribly, than if you had perished anywhere else.

Conclusion

This doctrine is as much God’s Word as the other. You ask me to reconcile the two. I answer, they do not want any reconcilement; I never tried to reconcile them to myself, because I could never see a discrepancy. If you begin to put fifty or sixty quibbles to me, I cannot give any answer. Both are true; no two truths can be inconsistent with each other; and what you have to do is to believe them both. With the first one, the saint has most to do. Let him praise the free and sovereign grace of God, and bless his name. With the second, the sinner has the most to do. O sinner, humble thyself under the mighty hand of God, when thou thinkest of how often he hath shown his love to thee, by bidding thee come to himself, and yet how often thou hast spurned his Word and refused his mercy, and turned a deaf ear to every invitation, and hast gone thy way to rebel against a God of love, and violate the commands of him that loved thee.

And now, how shall I conclude? My first exhortation shall be to Christian people. My dear friends, I beseech you do not in any way give yourselves lip to any system of faith apart from the Word of God. The Bible, and the Bible alone, is the religion of Protestants; I am the successor of the great and venerated Dr. Gill, whose theology is almost universally received among the stronger Calvinistic churches; but although I venerate his memory, and believe his teachings, yet he is not my Rabbi. What you find in God’s Word is for you to believe and to receive. Never be frightened at a doctrine; and above all, never be frightened at a name. Some one said to me the other day, that he thought the truth lay somewhere between the two extremes. He meant right, but I think he was wrong, I do not think the truth lies between the two extremes, but in them both. I believe the higher a man goes the better, when he is preaching the matter of salvation. The reason why a man is saved is grace, grace, grace; and you may go as high as you like there. But when you come to the question as to why men are damned, then the Arminian is far more right than the Antinomian. I care not for any denomination or party, I am as high as Huntingdon upon the matter of salvation, but question me about damnation, and you will get a very different answer. By the grace of God I ask no man’s applause, I preach the Bible as I find it. Where we get wrong is where the Calvinist begins to meddle with the question of damnation, and interferes with the justice of God; or when the Arminian denies the doctrine of grace.

My second exhortation is,—Sinners, I beseech every one of you who are unconverted and ungodly, this morning to put away every form and fashion of excuse that the devil would have you make concerning your being unconverted. Remember, that all the teaching in the world can never excuse you for being enemies to God by wicked works. When we beseech you to be reconciled to him, it is because we know you will never be in your proper place until you are reconciled. God has made you; can it be right that you should disobey him? God feeds you every day: can it be right that you should still live in disobedience to him? Remember, when the heavens shall be on a blaze, when Christ shall come to judge the earth in righteousness and his people with equity, there will not be one excuse that you can make which will be valid at the last great day. If you should attempt to say, “Lord, I have never heard the word;” his answer would be, “Thou didst hear it; thou heardest it plainly.” “But Lord, I had an evil will.” “Out of thine own mouth will I condemn thee; thou hadst that evil will, and I condemn thee for it. This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil.” “But Lord,” some will say, “I was not predestinated.” “What hadst thou to do with that? Thou didst; do according to thine own will when thou didst rebel. Thou wouldest not come unto me, and now I destroy thee for ever. Thou hast broken my law—on thine own head be the guilt.” If a sinner could say at the great day, “Lord, I could not be saved anyhow his torment in hell would be mitigated by that thought: but this shall be the very edge of the sword, and the very burning of the fire”—Ye knew your duty and ye did it not: ye trampled on everything that was holy; ye neglected the Saviour, and how shall ye escape if ye neglect so great salvation?”

Now, with regard to myself; you may some of you go away and say, that I was Antinomian in the first part of the sermon and Arminian at the end. I care not. I beg of you to search the Bible for yourselves. To the law and to the testimony; if I speak not according to this Word, it is because there is no light in me. I am willing to come to that test. Have nothing to do with me where I have nothing to do with Christ. Where I separate from the truth, cast my words away. But if what I say be God’s teaching, I charge you, by him that sent me, give these things your thoughts, and turn unto the Lord with all your hearts.
